''"Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality." - Lewis Carroll''
Our [[story->Night Before]] begins on the night before Bro and Lem start their 6th grade year at [[Landon]] Middle School near inner city [[Jacksonville]], Florida. A public magnet school for the arts. This will be their first year away from Assumption and their friends. Follow the story of their last days in the Land Beyond the Fence.
''Note to Bobby:'' Hey Bobby, really enjoyed your class. I really wish I could have taken more courses under you at SOU. Not that the other EMDA professors aren't great, but you are on a different level. I love to take the best qualities and methods from great leaders/teachers/coaches I meet and add them to my style of leadership. I will definitely be adding some of yours.
On my story - I'm sorry I was not able to finish it in it's entirety. Maybe someday it will be something I will publish. But, I'd like to keep working on it and maybe create something bigger for another course down in Jacksonville.
Thank you for everything,
BoThe public middle school nearest the neighborhood the Howard's lived in. It was different from Assumption in nearly everyway. Being a magnet school, children from all over Jacksonville came to focus on their interest in the arts.
Bro and Lem had recently been accepted to attend the school for the 6th grade year. Not knowing what to expect, they were both nervous and excited for the new adventure.A large metropolitan area split in half by the dark green waters of the St. Johns River. On the northern side, sky scrapers, stadiums, and the bustling harbors of the industrial block are a stark difference to what lies on the other side. The dense canopies of the old oak trees covered in spanish moss hid the large [[neighborhoods]] that weave along the southern bank of the river.Between rows and patches of historic neighborhoods are the large fields and campus of [[Bishop Kenny High School]]. [[Assumption]] and [[Landon]], two K-12 schools, sat in close proximaty to the high school. Many of the houses in these historic neighborhoods were over 100 years old. Some of the families living in them had been there just as long. Although they were only a few miles from the center of [[Jacksonville]], these neighborhoods felt small. Many of the residents where the families of students that went to the nearby schools, teachers, coaches, and small business owners who supported the school and community.
These neighborhoods sat on the southern bank of the St. Johns. The scent of coffee from the Maxwell House factory on the other side of the river was a normal smell to wake up to. The deep horns of barges on the river could be heard throughout the day. Duing football season, the roar and cries from Jaguars Stadium could be heard.
Kids traveled the back roads between neighborhoods, exploring the small patches of undeveloped land, playing on the bank of the river, and bouncing between each other's houses. The [[Howard's]]house was a frequent stop becuase of the large pool that provided some relief from the hot and humid days of Summer in Florida.
A large inner city Catholic high school located on the southern bank of the St. Johns River. The sprawling campus is nestled between two large neighborhoods and sits behind Assumption, the small elementary school that feeds into it. The most notable part of the campus were the large fields and sports complexes that lined the bank of the river. These fields were filled with great hiding spots and shortcuts to other parts of the surrounding neighborhoods. The K-8th private school Bro and Lem had attended since Kindergarten and where their Mother taught. It was located behind Bishop Kenny High School. Assumption was a small school that fed into Bishop Kenny. It was within walking distance from the Howard's House and for most students that lived in the large neighborhoods that lined the bank of the St. Johns River. It consisted of 4 large buildings - the Church, the Parish Hall, the Elementary Building and the Middle School Building. Bro and Lem were always involved with something going on at Assumption, in many ways it was their home away from home.A large two story brick house in the center of the historic neighborhoods near downtown [[Jacksonville]]. A large oak covered in Spanish Moss sat in the front yard. The light blue water of the pool sparkeled and tempted under that beating sun and oppresive heat of Summer in the south. Next to the pool a large trampoline and small backyard basketball court made the Howard's house a prime spot to hang out throughout the year.
The property backed up to the large sports fields of [[Bishop Kenny High School]]. [[Bro]] and [[Lem]], two of the three kids that lived there had cut a small hole in the chainlink fence that lead out into fields. To them, these fields were an extension of their backyard it was their Narnia, their Middle-earth, their Neverland - it was the [[Land Beyond the Fence]]. Of course, they also used hole in the fence as a shortcut to Assumption, the school they both attended and their Mother taught. There was hardly a weekend where you didn't see kids buzzing around the house like bees around a hive.
Mrs. Howard taught math at Assumption and Mr. Howard coached football at Bishop Kenny. Their oldest sister Amy went to high school further in town and was usually busy working or rehearsing for an upcoming play. Needless to say, the entire family was pretty involved in anything school related."Did you see the [[letter]]?" Lem asked staring at the Space Jam poster on the slanted ceiling of Bro's upstairs bedroom.
"Yeah" Bro replied, flipping through a binder of Pokemon cards.
She turned to look at him, obviously annoyed. "Well? What do you think?"
Shutting the binder, Bro stood up and placed it on the shelf next to his stack of Calvin and Hobbes books. He turned to face Lem, seeing the look on here face he sighed "Well, I guess he finally won, huh? The great Ob-Ob Khan has taken the land beyond the fence." he laughed "stupid childish game anyway, we knew it wouldn't last forever".
Tears began to well in Lem's eyes, "I guess..." she agreed wiping a rogue tear from her cheek. "Stupid games..."
"We've got a big day tomorrow, new school and new classmates. We probably should get some sleep before Mom starts yelling up the stairs" he finally said putting his new Matchbox Twenty CD into his Discman. "G'night sis, love you."
Bro put his headphones on, laid down and staired at the ceiling thinking about their last adventures in the [[Land Beyond the Fence]]. Before he knew it, tears were rolling down his cheeks. He sighed lightly and closed his eyes. He remembered his encounter with [[Malmsteen's Death Corps]] two weeks ago, where the end began...The segment of the letter from Bishop Kenny Bro and Lem saw the day after the fence was sealed.
"Dear Mr. Craig Howard,
853 Old Hickory Road
Jacksonville, Fl 32055
Upon receipt of this letter, your children are hereby forbidden to enter upon the premises described as below, of which Bishop Kenny High School has lawful control. Any further destruction of Bishop Kenny property will result in legal action...."
Bro squeezed one leg through the hole in the fence between the pool house and the pecan tree with a small rusty dial nailed into it. Like usual, he spun the broken dial on the trunk in a ritualistic manner before completely stepping through.
Brown leather boots studded with spiked steel crunched the twigs and leaves of the [[Barrier Woods]]. The warrior was dressed in a hard leather brigandine and spike studded bracers. Unlike most in the Land Beyond the Fence, he did not carry a weapon. He had mastered control over the magical power flowing through the Land Beyond and could materialize his weapon when needed. He was a [[Warden]], part a small group of people who could materialize weapons. The warrior strode into a small camp surrounded by a simple wooden palisade. He was greeted by two men in long blue capes and dark silver plate mail.
"Lord Commander" the one with the bronze aglet proclaimed with a short bow, "we are honored with your visit, how may we help you?"
Bro returned the bow to both soldiers, "Greeting's captain, I am headed north on a hunt. A large crab has surfaced and is wreaking havoc on the coastel villages of [[The Bend->Bend Locaton]]. I'm surprised you've not dealt with it."
"Aye, mi lord" he responded solemnly dropping his head slightly, "to be honest, Camp Border Wolf is in bad shape." He glanced to the lieutenant on his side "The Black Khan's van strikes near every other day and refugees pass through in needs of small provisions.", he finished meeting Bro's eyes.
Bro scanned the camp, he noticed the newly mended patches in the palisade and the small tents set up to treat the wounded. "Send for reinforcements and supplies from Camp Invicta, help as many refugees as you can, but our men must take priority when it comes to food and recovery." he placed his hand on the decurions shoulder "I will call the generals" he continued tapping the [[warhorn->Rho]] on his side, "and we will mount a counterattack when I return." He removed his hand and bowed quickly. "I must go now, keep up the good work captain". Bro finished turning toward the gate.
"Lord Commander" the captain called, "will you need an escort, sir?"
Bro replied with a salute "You need every man you have right now, strength and honor."
"Strength and honor" the captain repeated with the accompying salute as he watch the Commander of the Broish Warriors leave.
Bro gritted his teeth as he set off toward his prey. He knew of the [[situation->Flood of Refugees]] the border camps had to deal with, but [[the hunt->The Bend]] demanded his attention.
The Land Beyond the Fence was the name given to the fields, complexes and river coastline behind Bishop Kenny High School. The Fence, was a long fence line that seperated the Howard's neighborhood and the school property.
For years, Bro and Lem played in peace and developed forts and hideouts where they hung out with their friends. As Bro and Lem grew older, the Land Beyond the Fence had become a wartorn no-man's land. The Dark Army of [[Ob-Ob Khan]] had crossed green waters of the St. John's River and was pillaging and conquering the small countries and territories that made up the Land Beyond the Fence. The ornate oxhorn held by the Commander of the Broish Warriors. Both the mouth and horn opening are banded in gold. Ancient runes are etched in a spiral pattern running the length of the horn. When blown, it calls the three Generals of the Broish Warriors: The Hawk Knight - Tim, The Bulwark - Eric and The Lord of Tides - Jack.
The generals will always appear prepared to protect the Leader of the Broish Warriors with their lives.Cities and villages continue to fall as Ob-Ob Khan ravages the Land Beyond the Fence. The Broish Warrios and Crimson Outriders have set up camps, outposts and relief stations in an effort to aid the refugees. However, the sheer number of these poor smallfolk has caused resources to dwindle. All refugee camps have begun to ration out food as they aid families and those who have lost loved ones across the Fence. If the tide of darkness is not stopped, those left behind will die of starvation and sickness.Around noon, Bro had made it through the forest and strode out into the sunny wetlands, beyond which the broad, calm waters of the St. Johns stretched out. He forced his way through dried-up riverbeds and waded through shallows and backwaters. He spotted a small island covered in green algae and surrounded by cattails at the tip of The Bend and decided to use it as a vantage point. Spliting through rows of cattails, he slogged to the base of what looked like a large boulder. Placing one hand on slippery surface of the rock he began to climb.
Bro instantly realized his mistake. The rock lurched forward with a loud sucking noise. Losing his balance, Bro fell into the shallow waters crushing cattails as his hands sunk into the mud below the waters surface. Two massive blue pincers slid out of the mud, clicking and swaying as the rest of the crab's segmented legs pulled themselves up to support the heavily armored leviathan. Chunks of mud and sediment fell into the water as two long eyestalks pushed themselves out from under the thick upper carrapace.
Regaining his composure, Bro leapt to his feet and held out his hand. His sword, [[Skara]], materialized with a deafening crack. Bro stood in the on guard position with both hands squeezing the grip with one hand just above the pommel and the other slightly below hilt. He slowly released a breath as the ebony orbs of the crab's eyestalks met focus on him. The large maw opened revealing rows of razor sharp carapace teeth along with two small pincers used to shove prey deep into it's mouthparts.
The crab clicked several times and bolted sideways, encircling Bro with claws poised to strike. Anticipating the movement, Bro opened his stance and turned to face the serrated pincer. In a quick, practiced motion Bro exectued a flawless moulinet, the strike landed between to plates of the segmented pincer. The crab clicked vigourously as the pincer drooped into the water. The functioning claw flew toward Bro with unnatural speed. Bro managed to sidestep and deflect the blow, but was caught off guard by the drooping claw which swung wildly out of the water. The force of the blow threw Bro back onto dry land, knocking the wind from his chest. Coughing painfully, Bro got to feet in time to guard against a third and fatal attack. It wasn't enough, Bro's knee's buckled and he lay on all fours beneath the towering aquatic giant. His adrenaline surged as he spotted the small diamond shapped portion of the crab's underbelly. Bro rolled under the crab as the working pincer swung down, snapping furiously. With a quick motion, Bro drove Skara's blade into the diamond shaped crest, until hilt met underbelly. The crab clicked in pain as bubbles welled in the corners of it's mouthparts. Skara dematerialized and the crab staggered, tried to flee and crumpled under it's own weight. The clicking finally stopped.
Bro stood up slowly, made his way inland and fell onto his back breathing hard. As he lay there reviewing the fight in his mind he felt and heard the sound of hoofbeats approaching. Rolling to his side and proping himself up on an elbow, he recognized the riders in black plate mail. [["Malmsteen..."]]The name of Bro's materialized longsword. The blade, 3 and half feet of razor sharp dark blue steel, was hooked and barbed at the end. The hilt, grip and pommel were very basic in detail but added a nice counterbalance to the weight of the blade. While it lack ability to pierce most enemies, the hooked side could be used to catch, trip, disarm or remove the limbs from an opponent.
Like most materialized weapons, Skara was sharper and more durable than standard blades. Most importantly, it was not susceptible to the magical draining powers of Ob-Ob and his generals.
The materializion of these weapons drew on both the magical power of the user and the environment. Users could focus their energy to materialize their weapon quickly, resulting in a violent, usually harmless, discharge of magical energy. Conversely, slowly focusing the magical energy produced a more subtle materialization of the weapon. Aside from the magical requirement of both user and environment, these weapons could be drawn an unlimited amount of times."Well, Well, What do we have here?" said the one in black plate with a red crescent moon emblazoned on his chest. The words were muffled under the boars head helmet he wore. A truly foul helmet, intricate in detail and terrifying to behold. "Is that you Bro... what a pitiful sight", he continued.
"Malmsteen, the [[Lord of Swine]]" Bro said standing up and facing the riders, "a little far from the front line aren't we, Pig King?". Bro winced in an attempted smile, trying to hide any sign of pain.
Malmsteen dismounted his red stallion, removed his helmet and tossed it up to another rider. His face twisted into a grotesque smile as he approached Bro. His face, similar to most in the Dark Army was pale and gaunt. Like most, he had no hair, just craters and pockmarks. A long greatsword was slung across his back. The invaders could not materalize their weapons in the Land Beyond the Fence, they carried black steel weapons instead. He now stood before Bro with an evil smile on his face.
"A little risky, Malmsteen, pushing so deep into enemy territory." Bro said slowly steping back. "Even for a unit as deadly as yours", he continued taking another step. With a quick movement, Bro leapt back and grabbed his warhorn, Rho, brought it to his lips and blew hard into it. Dread filled Bro as the horn sputtered dully, water and bits of mud spraying out. Clogged.
"Ha!" Malmsteen shouted as he bound foward slamming a mailed fist into Bro's right cheek, temporarily blinding him with pain. Malmsteen grabbed the horn, tossed it to the ground and crushed it with a single strike of his boot. "Your toys won't help you, pup.", he said drawing the greatsword from his back. "This 'Land Beyond the Fence' as you sheep call it, will be subjugated and drained of it's magic. After I kill you, I will crush Lem's little red riders and finish the conquest myself." He laughed and delivered a quick blow Bro's gut sending him to all fours. "It's all over little Bro" he continued, kicking Bro in the ribs. Bro coughed in pain, blood lining the corners of his mouth. The riders laughed. "Now, die.", Malmsteen raised the greatsword above his head, his eyes flashed with bloodlust.
In the blink of an eye, four arrows whisteled through the air. Two of the riders fell forward onto the mane of their mounts and rolled off the saddle. The third was completely thrown off by the force of the shot. Malmsteen turned as an arrow caught him in the small space beneath the pauldron. Blood trickled down his left gauntlet.
"Lem...", Bro muttered as his eyes lost focus and everything [[faded to black->Lem to the Rescue]].Malmsteen Deveaux, the Lord of Swine, was Ob-Ob Khan's General of the Vanguard. It is said that in the Dark Army, Malmsteen stood alone as the cruelest and most sadistic general. It was not uncommon to come across a village razed by the Lord of Swine, the bodies flayed and stuck on aspen spikes stood as grim reminders of the brutality of war. War, Malmsteen loved it. He loved the carnage and devastation.
He wore the typical black platemail of the Khan's Dark Army. His prize possesion was his infamous boar's head helmet. The origins of the helmet or his obsession with it are unknown. But it's already made it's impact on the smallfolk in The Land Beyond, stories tell of a pig that devours everything in it's path - little children who don't obey their parent's are the first to be consumed.
Aside from the notorious helmet, Malmsteen's red haired stallion was recognizable across the Land Beyond Fence. Nearly as vicious as it's owner, the horse knew no equal on the battlefield."Bro!" Lem shouted from horseback, nocking another arrow. She pulled the bow string to her cheek and let loose another barbed projectile. Malmsteen deflected the arrow with the flat edge of his large greatsword.
"Retreat!" Malmsteen shouted to his remaining guardsmen. He sheathed his greatsword and used his uninjured arm to pull himself into the saddle. "Till next time, pup!", he said reigning in his horse, "Death Corps, we ride!"
"[[Courtney]], maintain pursuit to the border, cut down any stragglers!" Lem yelled, pointing at the fleeing Malmsteen. She leapt from the saddle, landing gracefully next to Bro. "Brother, how?" she said glancing between Bro and the shards of Rho laying next to him.
"Ambushed..." he groaned regaining a shred of consciousness.
Lem looked at him in disbelief, "This far in? Why?". She checked his wounds and whistled for a rider to bring a horse. "I knew you were on the hunt for the Crab of the Bend. Courtney and I rode out to aid you, we..."
"Aid me, under whose orders?" Bro interupted her. He held his side and stood up to receive the reigns of the horse that was brought to him.
Lem helped him into the saddle of the chestnut mare. "Orders from the top, they need you back at headquarters immediately.", she said looking up at him, "We were instructed to expedite the killing of the crab and see you back to the capital before nightfall." Lem continued as she threw one foot into a stirrup and the other over the saddle of her own bay mare.
"Lead the way Lem, and slowly, I think I've broken a rib or two", he turned and glanced at the shards of Rho as the horse trotted off toward the [[capital->Homecoming]].Courtney was Lem's shieldmaiden and second-in-command to the Crimson Outriders. She was small, agile and deadly. For the most part, she lead the covert ops unit of the Crimson Outriders. When not off on special missions behind enemy lines, she accompanies Lem on quests and adventures.
She only recently gained the ability to call on a materialized weapon and was still learning how to control the dual blades that had chosen her. "Unbelievable" Lem said shaking her head, "the horn got clogged in your fight against the crab!" she glanced over at him with a doubtful look on her face, "and here I expected you to make short work of that crab."
"Oh, give me a break" he replied shrugging off the slight, "you should have seen the size of the thing. In any case" he changed the subject "what is so pressing at the capital?"
She shrugged and smiled, "I guess we will both find out when we get there!"
The both squeezed through the hole in the fence. Boots became sneakers, plate mail become shorts and a t-shirt. Bo flicked the old rusty dial and watched it spin.
"Dishes, but [[Mom]], it's Lem's turn tonight!" he turned and glared at Lem who returned it with tiny smirk. "I took that crab we found in the pool all the way to the river, doesn't that count?"
"Thank you for doing that, but no, you know the rules and it's your turn." she smiled kindly and returned to making dinner.
He looked back over to Lem, "Not cool sis" and then started stacking plates.
The last few days off summer continued to count down. The school year approached quickly. The next [[adventure->Vital Information]] began 9 days before the first day of school. Lem needed to return a video game that Eric had let them borrow while Bro went fishing with his Dad. The quickest route to Eric's house was through the Land Beyond the Fence.
The dial spun, the fenced clinked, and Lem was off at breakneck speed. She was saddled on her bay mare, she wore reinforced riding trousers, a red leather jerkin and a tricorne hat adorned with a small red feather. As a Warden, she did not carry a weapon at her side, she was able to materialize her weapon in a time of need. Today, however, she had a small scroll strapped to her belt. Her mission was to deliver the scroll deep within the heart of enemy territory, to a small cell of embedded saboteurs.
She knew the Barrier Woods as well as anyone, the shortcuts and secret passages unknown to others, especially the enemy. She knew that she had to be back at the capital before noon or risk upsetting the Queen. Bro had gone fishing with the King, so she could not count on his aid if things got hairy. She had to accomplish the task alone.
She galloped through the woods, still safely in allied territory, to the first set of many crossroads she would encounter. She slowed to a trot and weighed her options. To the [[left]], she would leave the Barrier Wood and could skirt the edge of the river. While this was the quickest way, she would be put in a bind if the Khan's forces pinned her back against the water. The trail leading down the [[middle]] of the crossroads would lead her out into the small villages and hamlets that spotted the countryside. While not entirely safe, she would be able to hide from any type of pursuit. Finally, the path to the [[right]], was the longest but safest. She would remain in the forest, hugging the Fence.
She knew that she left capital at 10:30am. That would give her an hour to reach Camp Phantom. Once the scroll was delivered, she could take the quickest route home without risk the enemy getting their hands on the vital information.

Following the path north, Lem passed through Camp Border Wolf and eventually into The Bend. From there she took the road east along the bank of the St. Johns. Her heart sank as she saw her destination on the horizon, plumes of dark smoke rose from Camp Oxblood.
Camp Oxblood, the capital's most northern base of operations, sat along the bank of the St. Johns River and was the gateway to The Bend. If it had fallen, it was only a matter of time before the Khan's Dark Army took The Bend.
Lem spurred her horse on and approached the base, noticing that various portions of the palisade wall had been completely destroyed. Both doors of the main gate hung loosely from their hinges. Lem entered the base and threw a hand over her mouth, bodies of soldiers and smallfolk lay in puddles around the charred remains of buildings. The merciless carnage extended all the way through the base. Lem slowed as she heard several deep voices arguing behind on of the larger remaining structures. Dismounting, she snuck around the building to see what was going on.
Two sisters of the Crimson Outriders were bound and kneeling before five soldiers in black platemail. "Let's kill them and return. We've swept the area, these were the only two left alive." the smallest soldier said gesturing toward the soldier with the small red crescent moon on his pauldron.
"I agree captain" another soldier chimed in looking between the captives and the soldier with the crescent moon, "it's only a matter before reinforcements arrive." He finished looking around as if being watched.
"Shut it, both of you!" the captain shouted, his pale, hairless head beading with sweat. "Since when did I start listening to the opinions of you four!" he continued, wiping the sweat from his brow and sliding on his visorless sallet. "We're taking them to Lord Malmsteen, prepare to leave."
Lem put her back against the wall of what remained of a shed or small house. She was outnumbered 5 to 1, but had the element of surprise and she was the leader of the Crimson Outriders after all. She held out her hands to summon her bow and spear, she could either [[fight to free her sisters]] or return to her horse and [[ride on]] to complete her mission at Camp Phantom.
10:45am
The forest gave way to rolling hills and prairies of the [[Calcaire Champaign]]. Lem spotted the first village, Forestford, an average size lumbertown which sat between the Barrier Wood and the St. George, a tributary of the St. Johns. She noticed smokestacks from several chimenys and nicely populated pigsty. The village looked virtually unaffected by the war. She reigned her horse to a trot and neared the village.
She noticed a group of men sitting around a barrel flipping through cards, occasionally throwing a choice card onto the stack. She recognized several pieces of armor each was wearing, Broish Warrior raiments paired with random pieces of plain leather armor. Brigands. She spied three more patroling the main road in town. At least six bandits. Lem resented bandits, especially during the war. They were ruthless, usually desserters, and would take advantage of the plight of the smallfolk at any opportunity. She had to make a quick decision before she was spotted. [[Fight]] or [[flee]].
10:50am
Lem followed the road south, staying close to the safety of the Fence. The great oaks of the Barrier Wood finally gave way to the [[Mar Saba Downs]], the desolate home to [[The Banneux Necropolis]]. Barrows and mounds gave the bleak and featureless terrain an odd, almost sinister feel. It was no wonder why the area so scarcely habitated, who knew what terror roamed the fields at night. A dense fog hovered lazily over the Downs, masking a few of the larger barrows. Lem noticed the earthen door of a nearby mound had been moved and the glow of a fire flickered faintly within the cavern. Lem curiously approached the defiled grave.
Dismounting, Lem slowly materialized her bow as to not alert whatever was dwelling within. She peered around the mossy flagstone entrance into the dimly lit cavern. A man with long brown hair sat facing the small fire in the center of the cave. Stone carved effigies sat along the circular wall, each held a stone shield which were decorated with a tower and three stars. The faces, continually transformed by the light of fire, stared menacingly at the intruder. Next to the man lay a suit of armor, the colors and insignia of the Broish Warriors.
"Who are you?" Lem asked in her most aggressive and commanding voice. "Don't move." she commanded as the man slowly turned to face her, his hands up. "Thief or deserter, answer quickly", she stared intently at him, bow string against her cheek.
He recognized her, "Lady Lem... I..." he stammered looking both nervous and ashamed. "I have lost both my brothers, a mother and a father to this war. I cannot go back, I cannot... forgive me mi'lady" he looked away in shame.
Lem had a soft heart, but could not stomach the dishonor of desertion. An outpost was within range of her hunting horn, she could [[call the guard->call guards]] to escort the man to a holding cell for her return or should could attempt to [[recruit]] the man to aid her on the mission.
10:50am
Unfortunately, the mission was a priority and she couldn't risk jeopordizing the safety of an entire unit to save two of her own. She saddled her horse feeling absolutely terrible. With a knot in the pit of her stomach, Lem spurred her bay mare on and left the village.
Now behind enemy lines, Lem needed to turn south in order to reach Camp Phantom. Other than her brief stop in Camp Oxblood, Lem was making great time. In the event of another obstacle, she knew she would have plenty of time to deal with it. She didn't realize that such an obstacle would present itself so quickly.
Turning south, she caught sight of a small enemy scouting unit heading her way. On the southern bank of the St. Johns, there was virtually no cover or place to hide. She knew she couldn't turn back, as the group in Camp Oxblood would be on there way back to Malmsteen soon. Lem was faced with two options, she could [[attempt to flee]] further east into enemy territory or [[confront]] the the scouting unit.
10:55am
Lem could not let this injustice stand. She slowly materalized her composite bow as she dismounted. She quickly analyzed the situation, noting the ladder which lead to the top of a barn. The choice was simple, engage [[head on]] or [[snipe->snipe and finish]] a few and finish the rest off.
10:50am
Realizing time is of the essence, Lem decided to cirlce around the village and keep moving. She turned her mare and spurred it on toward a small bridge near the mill.
"Whoa there, wench!" a lone bandit sitting on a perch near the mill shouted pulling up a crossbow. "Dismount for inspection, no one in or out of Forestford with the captain's permission." He began loading a bolt, "Let's do this the easy way, young lady."
Lem scoffed and kicked spurred heels into her horse, it neighed loudly and raced forward. She could hear the bandit shouting and warning the others, the shouting of others joined the first. A crossbow bolt whistled dangerously close, splintering against a post on the barn in front of her. She rode on, anticipating the thud a cold steel bolt between her shoulders. The [[barn]] door was open, she could evade the snipers and inside the dark cramped barn their numbers would count for nothing. However, Camp Grizzly and the current border were only a 20 minute ride from Forestford, but would require here to [[flee through the village->on to next village]].
11:00am
"On your knees coward!" demanded Lem, arrow pointed at the deserter's chest. "Many have paid the ultimate sacrifice, many have fought and lost all. I am sorry for your loss, but I cannot tolerate desertion." she finished stepping back and dropping her to blow the hunting horn, calling in the nearest guard.
The deserter hunched over, sitting on his heels. Lem remained at the ready, holding the bow and arrow at waist level. She studied the broken man, his weapon lay near his armor in it's wooden scabbard. She picked it up and tossed it outside. With the guards one their way, she had to decide whether to [[wait]] for their arrival or [[bind the deserter and leave]].
10:55am
Lem stared at the man, frowned and finally said "I will not stand for desertion, no matter the reason or motivation". She dematerialized her bow and continued, "I'm on a mission, I don't have time to deal with this right now." she turned around and started toward the door, "Grab you things, you coming with" Lem finished without turning around.
The man that came out of the cavern in no way resembled the man she had found. He stood tall, the leather armor fit well, and the long hair had been pulled back in a tight ponytail. "Your name, soldier?" Lem asked.
"Robert of House Hightower... that was my families grave", he met her eyes and immediately looked away. "Mi'lady, may I humbly ask the details of the mission //we// are on?"
"Very well, //we// must deliver special orders to a group behind enemy lines." she said, her voice firm and commanding. "We have a problem though" she continued while saddling her horse, "you do not have a mount."
He looked to the ground, his hands formed fists "Mi'lady, let me carry out this task, give me the details and [[entrust this mission-> entrust mission]] to me!" he went to a knee, "Let me atone for dishonor and bring glory to my name."
Lem thought for a moment as she looked at the kneeling soldier, "No.". "Robert of House Hightower, I have [[another way->diversion]] you may redeem your honor and bring glory to your house" she reached for his hand, "come, I will need your sword."
11:10am
"The importance of this base cannot be denied, The Bend relies on it's presence for protection. But, while Tuun is recharging, I will be in trouble if I encounter another group like that..." Lem said as if speaking to herself. "Rise, sisters!" she commanded as she turned to face them. "I need to ask for your aid in completing my journey to Camp Phantom." she finished, awaiting their response.
"Of course Lady Lem!" one responded.
"We are at your disposal Mi'Lady!" the other added.
"Very well." she replied nodding with resolve. "Grab a horse, they won't be needing them anymore" Lem gestured toward horses of their dead captors. "Time is of the essence sisters, we must make haste south."
A drizzle turned into a down pour as the three pushed deeper into enemy territory. Lem tried to shield her face from the sting of the relentless monsoon. They were quickly approaching the ruins of an old fortress that the Broish Warriors had once used as a base of operations during the initial landing of Ob-Ob Khan and his Dark Army, when Lem caught the scent of death. The overwhelming odor grew stronger the closer they got to the ruins. She tried to warn two riding with her, but it was too late, she recognized portly giant immediately. Phenex, [[The Tainted Lord]].
Phenex, the armored giant with his infamous smiling helmet, chuckled loudly. The stench grew as blight bubbled and spewed from the slits inside the mouth of his disfigured helmet. "I see you Lem!" He called, pointing a large finger at her. "I've been waiting to add you to my... collection." he laughed again and signaled his undead retinue into action. The riders sprung to life in an unnatural, almost mechanical fashion.
"Leave them to us my Lady!" one her Outriders shouted making a hand signal to the other. "We will hold them off!"
"Go Mi'Lady!" the other added, mustering whatever courage she had left.
Lem turned to reply, but the two had already peeled off and engaged the enemy. Four undead soldiers passed the distraction and turned toward Lem at full tilt. She turned, spurred her horse on toward Camp Phantom trying to lose her [[undead pursuit]] in the the torrential down pour.
11:00am
Lem materialized her short spear instantly, the intensity of the crack caused the three playing cards to jump to their feet and grab their weapons as she planted the spear and took aim. The bandits were too slow, Lem had rattled off two arrows in quick succession, one bandit grabbed the shaft sticking out of his eye while he fell and the other toppled limply to the ground. The third card-playing bandit, shouted and charged wildly point his longsword at Lem.
The small patrol on the main road heard the shout and called the others, in a matter of mintues Lem was facing ten armed bandits. She looked down at the three slain bandits and said, "You all ready to join them? [[Tuun]]!" she shouted, as two red phantoms appeared and began to fire a volley of arrows at the group of bandits. Lem laughed wildly and lunged toward the nearest bandit.
A whirlwind of blades and it's symphony of battle followed. Lem and her phantoms had managed to kill six bandits and wound two others, but it was not enough. She watched her spear dematerialize as the ground around turned into a black and red puddle.
[[Mission Failed]]
11:15am
Lem followed a line of small homes to the ladder of the barn. Quickly gaining the high ground, she began to mark her targets. At least seven outside, three on patrol at the town center, another 3 around a keg nearest the forest and another lounging near the mill on the edge of town. No easy task. She grabbed the [[amulet->Tuun]] around her neck and whispered "Tuun...". The crisp smell of ozone filled the air. Two red phantoms crouched near Lem, bows drawn on the group playing cards.
"On my mark..." Lem whispered, licking her lips. "Go!".
The town elder scanned the area, "Lady Lem, this village owes you a great debt." he said coughing into his sleeve. "Those bandits have been sucking our town dry over the past few months." he coughed, "This war... it brings out the worst in some."
"Your wellbeing is all the thanks I require, Elder" she bowed, "I will assign a small unit of Outriders to patrol the area on my return" she continued as she saddled her horse. "Farewell."
Lem spurred her horse to top speed, her time to complete the mission was quickly coming to a close. The [[quickest route]] to Camp Phantom was her only option, regardless of it safety.10:55am
Lem, fearing a bolt in the back, reigned her horse in, turned and headed into the barn. She quickly scanned her surroundings; four empty stalls, one was filled with field tools, another with a mound of hay, and a ladder leading to a loft. Lem jumped from her saddle, lead her horse to an empty stall and climbed to the loft. She could her shouting and commotion outside as bandits began to surround the barn. "[[Tuun]]..." she whispered. Two deafening cracks and the smell of ozone followed, Lem was armed with bow and spear kneeling beside two crimson phantoms.
Someone outside whistled loudly and four bandits entered the barn, two with raised crossbows aimed toward the loft, the other two ran and hid behind stalls and either side of the barn. Lem shouted "Go!", one crossbowmen dropped his weapon and stumbled back, falling short of the door. The other wheezed loudly and red froth filled his mouth, an protruding just above his sternum. The shouting continued outside as the red sentries continued to release arrows toward the barn door.
Eventually the shouting stopped and three lit torches flew in through the entrance. The pile of hay burst into flames almost instantly, sending a pillar flames up the side of the barn. Lem looked toward the roof of the barn for any sort of escape. A small hatch was closed just above the loft. As the inferno intensified, the two phantoms lurched forward and began to fade from existence. Lem leapt toward the hatch, grabbed an edge and pushed the door upward. Stuck. She let go and fell back onto the loft, the flames surrounding her. Only one option remained. She grabbed her spear and leapt from the loft, flames singed her clothing and the hair on her arms. Gripping her spear tightly and shouting she left the barn, immediately finding herself surrounded.
Lem put up a fight, at least three bandits had fallen, another lay wounded and wimpering. Lem dropped her spear, staggered foward and fell motionless into the sand.
[[Mission Failed]]11:05
Lem spurred her horse on again, a second bolt missed by a hair. She heared shouting behind her, but was reluctant to glance back and she was being pursued on horseback. The tension in her jaw, neck and shoulders began to subside as the shouts became muffled by rhythmic beat of ironshod hooves. She chanced a peak and found herself alone, she wasn't on the Calcaire Highway, but could see Newtown on the horizon. The border was close.
The smell of raw sewage filled her nostrils and dread fell over her like an invisible blanket. Out of the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of hulking monstrosity, fresh ooze streamed from the hideously smiling face. A crack of thunder and the rain began. She wiped her face and twisted in the saddle, looking for Phenex, [[The Tainted Lord]]. He stood watching her, blight mixing with rain water formed a steaming puddle around his feet. His undead entourage hung their heads lifelessly behind him.
"Lem!" the giant roared pointing her way, his smiling helmet frothing sickeningly. The mounted undead soldiers snapped to attention unnaturally, spurred their mounts and shot after her.
She looked back one last time, enough to see the dull glow of eyes beneath her [[undead pursuit]]. She spurred on whatever energy still resided in the mount beneath her. Camp Phantom was within her grasp.
11:15am
The two were well into enemy territory. The weather had turned for the worst, lightning and a heavy rain made for hard riding. Lem's bay mare struggled with each crack of thunder. They were close though, she knew this area before it had become a wasteland, drained of it magic. "Only a little further, Robert!" she shouted over her shoulder as they rode on.
His hood was down, protecting his face from the wind and rain. It was in that moment he felt it, the heavy feeling, the kind emanating from a commander of the dark legion. There was no mistake, he had felt it before, when his brothers were killed. No, this feeling was exactly the same. It was him, the giant in black plate male, the mask... [[Phenex->The Tainted Lord]].
Robert pushed himself from the back of Lem's horse and drew his sword. "Phenex!" he shouted, turning to face the giant who stood over him, terrible and corpulent. From the slits in his hideously smiling helmet an oozing blight poured onto his inflated armor. The stench of death filled the air. Robert watched as three of Phenex's guard peeled off in pursuit of Lem.
"The blood of a coward..." Phenex, The Tainted Lord said as the noxious blight bubbled from his visor. "Yes, I know the smell of your blood, young lord of Hightower" he hawked, the acrid scent of death growing stronger. "Come, let me show you..." he wheezed, "...Philip, Gregory!". Two of the horsemen fell from their mounts and shambled toward Phenex, Robert watched in horror as they removed their helmets.
"Nn... NO!" Robert shouted. The two horsemen stared lifelessly at him, their glazed eyes did not recognize the soldier before them.
Phenex cackled, spewing pestilence and a nauseating odor. He grabbed the smaller one by the head and crushed it in his large gauntlet. The smaller corpse fell to it's knees and then to it's chest.
Robert grew pale, flipped the hood from his head and shouted, "You bastard!". He threw his cape back and charged the giant. The taller corpse stepped forward and swung wildly, Robert dodged and put a shoulder into it's chest. What was left of his brother flew back and lay motionless. Phenex was on him quickly, his barbed mace swung short. Robert leapt back, fixed his grip and stood at the ready. The slits of the Tainted Lord's helmet oozed and bubbled.
Robert smiled hideously, Lem was no where in sight. He could only hope that she could deal with her [[undead pursuit]]. He steeled himself, roared and charged the Tainted Lord. No one could say he died a coward...
The Mar Saba Downlands covered a small portion of the southern tip of the Land Beyond the Fence. The Downs were located just south of the Barrier Wood and directly east of the Fence. Mar Saba acted as a massive graveyard for the Land Beyond the Fence. This was mostly due to quality of the soil and perpetual fog that made farming in the area more trouble than it was worth. Very few people still lived in the area, the only village there had been abandoned years ago. Tales of wights and lichs roaming the Downs at night were popular amoung children in the Land Beyond the Fence.
Large burial mounds served as access points for the sprawling corridors and halls of the Banneux Necropolis that resided be below the Downs. The elusive, pale crypt keepers, called Spooks, who lived in the burrows were said to resemble the dead more than living. There were few places in The Land Beyond the Fence that Bro and Lem feared. The Banneux Necropolis was one of them. They knew the horrors that dwelled in the crypts below Mar Saba Downs. The decrepid catacombs had once been a great architectural feat and the pride of the Mar Saba people who worshiped the god Banneux. The now crumbling ruins housed legion of undead.
It is said that an avatar of Banneux resides in the deepest halls of the Necropolis, amassing an army of undead to destroy the Fence and feast on those living safely in the capital. The Barrier Wood was the name of the large forest of oak and pecan trees that span nearly the entire length of the Fence. Small military camps strategically placed throughout the forest form the last line of defense against Ob-Ob Khan's Dark Army. Refugee relief camps inside the forest continue to grow as the war rages and the front line is pushed closer to the wall. Small groups of bandits have begun to roam the woods, preying on the lost and unfortunate smallfolk taking refuge from the war.
Directly east of the Barrier Wood is the sprawling expanse of Calcaire Champaign. To the south, the Mar Saba Downs and The Bend to the North. The Bend was name for the northern tip of the Land Beyond the Fence. The St. Johns River flows north from it's headwaters about 200 miles to the south, at The Bend the river turns east toward the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.
In the Land Beyond the Fence, The Bend is a wetland, home to fishers and trappers. There are no villages to speak of, most of the smallfolk live in scatterd stilt houses or anchored docks. These people enjoy relative peace and safety as the Bend is well behind the frontline. Gators, giant crabs and poisonous bogs pose a greater threat than an assault from the Dark Army.
The Bend is one of the primary sources of food in the Land Beyond the Fence. Several camps are stationed nearby ready to respond to any threat with quick reaction forces. The Calcaire Champaign was the largest, and most populated, biome in The Land Beyond Fence. Large swathes of farmland were dotted with limestone outcrops. Aside from fruit orchards, there were no large forest aside from the Barrier Wood to the west of the Champaign. Villages and hamlets followed the Calcaire Highway which weaved through the open countryside leading to the largest city, Newtown Wellington.
Newtown Wellington, or simply Newtown, was a large mining city built around quarry. A massive limestone wall surrounded and protected the city. Newtown currently acted as a stronghold and staging area for the Capital's army, including the Broish Warriors and Crimson Outriders.11:10am
Not trusting the deserter wouldn't up and run as soon as she left, Lem decided to stay until the guards arrived. She was honorbound to see this man into the hand's of justice. The guard's arrived after a short time, bound the man and threw him over the saddle. Feeling a sense of lawful pride, Lem thanked the guards and bid them farewell.
With the sudden realization that she was far behind schedule, Lem leapt into her saddle and spurred the horse to top speed. She had to take the [[quickest route]] regardless of it's level of safety. She flew through the Downs in route to Camp Phantom.11:05am
Although honorbound to see the deserter safetly into the hands of the coming guard unit, Lem knew she had limited time to accomplish her mission. She grabbed a rope from her saddle and approached her kneeling captive. Lem was caught by surprise, the seemingly cooperative deserter sprung to his feet like a wild animal, throwing his forhead into Lem's chin. Lem made an unnatural cry as she stumbled back, holding her chin in throat. Her heel caught the soldier's cap and she tripped, her back slammed into the shield of a stone effigy. The deserter his shield on the ground and swung it with two hands, the hard wood connected with a loud thud. Lem's body fell limp as she passed out sitting against the statue.
[[Mission Failed]]11:25am
Strapped for time, Lem raced to her destination. Drenched and cold from the heavy rain, she navigated through the once familiar landscape now ravaged by the Khan's Dark Army. As she approached the ruined fort that hid the underground base of operations for Camp Phantom, she caught site of a large squad of enemy forces combing the area. Their leader, a giant of both height and weight, sat on his ebony mount watching his minions search the ruins.
"[[Phenex->The Tainted Lord]], what is he doing here." she thought aloud, still at a safe distance. "Has Phantom already fallen?" she continued to talk to herself, watching the steam rise from the blight flowing from Phenex's smiling helmet.
If it had already fallen, going in now would mean certain death. Lem still had the chance to [[accept defeat->Mission Failed]] and return home on time. Or she could take the chance to [[sneak in]] and check for survivors. She continued to stare at the Tainted Lord, weighing her options.11:50am
Bro and his Dad returned early from their fishing trip. Hungry from a long day on the water, Bro grabbed everything needed to make an epic sandwich, he spread everything out and got to work.
"Bro-son!" his mom said in surprise, using the nickname she had used for year. "You're home how did go, are we going to have a little fish fry tongith?" she continued excitedly. "Oh, hey honey, would you mind running out back and finding your sister." She went one without letting him respond, "she left to take that game back to Eric's house about an hour ago and I need to take her shopping for school supplies this afternoon. Don't make that face, I'll finish up here!"
With an empty stomach, Bro set off to the fields behind the house in search of Lem. It didn't take long. He found her laying in a field looking up into the sky. "What are you doing, you weirdo?" Bro said walking up to her.
"I'm dead." she replied staring at a passing cloud.
"Well dead girl, you better get home, you're supposed to go shopping with mom after lun..." he was cut short and Lem rolled over and jumped to her feet.
"Wait, what time is it!" she asked dreadfully.
"About 12, umm, you haven't taken the game back yet? he asked looking at the case in her hand/
She tossed him the game and started running home. "I told you, I died. Help a sister out Bro Bro!" she called over her shoulder, hurrying home.
Bro watched her leave and sighed as his stomach groaned. He headed off to Eric's house thinking about the sandwich waiting for him at home. It wasn't a complete waste of a trip, he wanted to see if Eric could come over [[Friday]] to spend the night.
11:00am
Lem seriously considered Robert's offer, the queen had offered to take her shopping if she returned to the capital in time. She didn't particularly care if the deserter made it back or not. As long as he got the information to Camp Phantom, the mission would be a success. Lem considered the state of her riding trousers, glanced at the scrool and nodded.
"Very well, Robert. I entrust this task with you" she declared and proceeded to fill him in on the details.
"I will not fail you Lady Lem." he held the salute of the Broish Warriors, "Strength and Honor!"
She returned the salute and handed Robert the scroll. "Find me after task is complete, I will pardon you and assign you to an outpost within the Barrier Wood." she dismounted, handed him the reigns and said "Many lives rely on this information".
He nodded, "I won't let you down! Ha! He spurred the horse into full gallop and took off
Robert Hightower was never heard from or seen again. Camp Phantom fell shortly after, the orders hidden inside the scroll were never received.
[[Mission Failed]]Phenex Blackett, the Tainted Lord, was the Khan's judge, jury and executioner, and in the Dark Army trials were a rare occurance. Blackett stood over seven feet tall and weighed at least 400 pounds. He was a mountain of oozing pestilence.
Like most of the Khan's generals, he wore a distinctive helmet. His resemembled the face of a disfigured young man with a large, menacing smile. Between the slits, or teeth, of the broad smile a greenish-brown blight constantly flowed. The smell of the ooze was unbearable and nauseating. His armor barely fit and seemed to hold in the bulging parts of his unshapely body.
Phenex had the ability to fill the bodies of dead soldiers with his blight. He find's particular pleasure in afflicting peoples friends and loved ones.11:20am
Lem's tricorne hat flew off in the torrent, her braid unraveled and wet hair whirled and slapped her shoulders. She spurred her mount on, drawing on whatever energy the beast had left in it. Looking back, she saw that she had gained a significant lead on her pursuit. Her heart leapt when she saw the ruins of Camp Phantom and the pair of sentries on the crumbling turret tracking the undead soldiers behind her.
Lem crossed into the ruined courtyard as the archers above picked off the remainder of Phenex's pursuit squad. The two leapt from their perch and greeted her with a salute, "We've been expecting you Lady Lem, the captain awaits inside. Please follow us." The two lead her deeper into the ruins toward a large, seemingly untouched wall. One of the archers placed fist on the wall, it reacted with the signet ring the archer wore and faded, revealing a long corridor.
"An illusory wall..." Lem said with wonder as she entered the corridor.
The archer snapped his fingers and the wall shimmered back into existence. "Yes, a family secret, we have guarded this fortress for generations." he looked away shamefully, "even after it fell, I remained here to protect what is left."
An older soldier with graying hair entered the corridor to greet Lem. His armor was battleworn and weathered, his face wrinkled and leathery. In the Land Beyond the Fence, he was the paragon of knightly excellence. Gallant and chivalrous, he undertook any mission given to him from the Capital, regardless of difficulty. One of which lead him to lead a squad of sabotuers of the the ruins of Camp Phantom. Soldiers often joked that Camp Phantom was the Capitals retirement for Captain Stetson.
"Captain Stetson!" Lem exclaimed, overjoyed as she hugged his neck. He was like an uncle to her, had trained her in archery and swordsmanship, took her on adventure through the Barrier Wood, and had even helped her in establishing the Crimson Outriders.
"Lem, it is so good to see you, child." he returned the hug. "I had begun to fear for the worst. General Phenex is on to us, he constantly roams the ruins trying to sense our presence." he looked at her kindly, but she saw fear deep in his eyes. "The scroll..." he began to say, but was cut short.
"Oh! Of course!" Lem grabbed the scroll and handed it to him immediately.
He took the scroll and examined the contents within. His face remained stoic and hard. "Very well..." he said slowly closing the scroll and placing it in his belt and met her gaze. "Lem, your brother..."
He was never able to finish the sentence, a younger soldier dressed in full battle armor burst into the corridor, "[[Captain Stetson->Captain]]!" he cried as his voice trembled with horror.Similar to Bro's warhorn, Rho, Lem's artifact has the ability to summon two Crimson Phantoms. Tuun, a steel chainlink necklace holding a small amulet with the Tuun rune etched into the center. The amulet's rune is studded with rubys of various shapes and sizes.
Like most relics, Tuun needed to recharge between uses. These relics drew upon and stored environmental magic, allowing for them to be activated in situations where there was no environmental magic to draw upon. Understanding a relic's cooldown was vital to using it efficiently.
The amulet only reacts to Lem's voice. If activated by anyone else the amulet will shatter and the phantoms summoned will attempt to kill the fraudulent summoner.
Bro was the middle child of Howard Family. He was a stocky young boy with long blonde hair, freckles and big metal braces. If he wasn't out running around the [[Fearsome Foursome]]. He was hanging out with his younger sister Lem. The two would often explore the fields behind their house, usually equipped with wooden swords and shields or plastic guns and armor. In the World Beyond the Fence, he commanded the [[Broish Warriors]], a small elite group of soldiers who stood vigil against the constant onslaught from the forces of the evil Ob-ob Khan. Lem was Bro's younger sister. In their younger years, they looked almost like twins. Lem had long blonde hair, freckles and usually sported a cast on her arm or was covered in bandages and bruises. She was wild child who always had to get the top of the tallest tree before the all the boys or one-up here brother on the skateboard or bicycle. She and Bro were inseparable. In the Land Beyond the Fence, she was leader of the [[Crimson Outriders]]. A band of horsemen who harried the supply lines to the entrenched forces of [[Ob-Ob Khan]].Generals of the [[Broish Warriors]]. The Fearsome Foursome was the name given to a group of four boys who attended Assumption together - Bro, Jack, Eric and Tim. They all lived within a mile of Assumption and would ride between each others houses nearly every day in the Summer. They weren't as "fearsome" as their name implied. In fact, they were mostly gamers that were always seen hanging out together in and out of class by faculty and other students. Any allowance they got went toward their favorite outdoor hobby - paintball. Any undeveloped wooded area became their arena, where they recreated battle scenes from movies and history. When the C02 and paintballs were out, they resumed their campaign as generals against Ob-ob Khan in the Land Beyond the FenceA small but highly tactical group of warriors specializing in guerilla warfare under the command of Bro and his generals in the Land Beyond the Fence. They opposed the encroaching forces of Ob-ob Khan and used all means necessary to protect the Fence from his grasp. They had many small hidden encampments in the Land Beyond the Fence which they used at hideouts and points of ambush. Their closest allies were the Crimson Outriders. The two forces often worked in unison to disrupt or slow the endless flow of the Khan's Dark Army.Quick, highly mobile, and highly deadly. The Crimson Outriders, led by Lem, were a scourge to the flanks and rear guard of Ob-ob Khan's Dark Army. Their raids on supply camps were crucial to the war effort. They often worked with the Broish Warrios in "Hammer and Anvil" style tactics against the Khan Forces. They would apply pressure, harrasing the back line, forcing the small brigades of Dark Forces into walls of allied forces. The fictional personification of everything negative in the lives of Bro and Lem. The nameless, faceless enemy that represented both external problems and adversity as well as the internal struggles of growing up.
When Bro and Lem entered the Land Beyond the Face, Ob-Ob and his legions materialized and continued their brutal campaign to conquer the Fence. As his power and influence grew, parts and places of the Land Beyond the Fence faded and disappeared.
Ultimately, he wanted to seal the hole in the Fence and prevent Bro and Lem from ever returning. If he could take the Fence, he would have uncontested control of the Land Beyond and would gain a foothold into conquest of the neighborhoods. 10:50am
Lem slowly materialized both spear and bow. She planted her spear in the dirt beside her, grabbed her [[amulet->Tuun]] and whispered the name of the rune etched into it, "Tuun...". With a soft reverberation of sound and the smell of ozone, two red phantoms similar to the bound Outriders appeared by her side. "Cover me", she whispered as she nocked an arrow, took aim and fired at the captain.
The arrow caught edge of the captain's gorget, spun out of control and confusion followed. "There here! There..! the short soldier's shouting was cut short as two arrows sprung from his gut. The captain fell back reaching for the non-existent arrow in his gorget. Three others formed a semicircle around the captives and raised their swords.
Lem jumped from behind the cover of the shed and sprinted toward the captian. Her two phantoms continued to send arrows flying toward the three guarding the captives. The captain grabbed the sword at his side and began to draw it from it's metal scabbard. Lem leapt, planted a foot on the pommel, pushing the sword back in. The captain looked up in fear as Lem raised her hand toward his chest and rematerialized her spear. With a thunderous crack a melon sized hole appeared in the captain's chest around the shaft of Lem's spear. He fell back lifeless. Meanwhile, two of the three others had fallen to the relentless barrage of the red phantoms. The third seeing his comrades laying dead around, sheathed his weapon, turned and fled. He did not get far, his run turned to a walk and then a stumble. He made a weak attempt to grab one of the shafts sticking out of his back as he fell.
"Are you alright?" Lem asked as she cut the ropes binding the two captives. "What happened here?"
"Yes Lady Lem", one of the captives said, massaging her wrists. "Forgive us, we arrived shortly after the camp had been sacked." she said and remained kneeling.
Lem looked from one Outrider to the other, "I see..." she stood and turned away from the two. "What a mess, I should have known this wouldn't be as easy as it sounded...". Lem closed her eyes in thought. She could [[send the two off]] to Camp Border Wolf with orders to send a relief unit to retake the base or [[take them->Use Diversion]] with her on her mission to Camp Phantom.11:10am
Lem made up her mind, The Bend was vital to what was left of The Land Beyond the Fence and Camp Oxblood was vital to protecting it. "Sisters, rise." they rose and stood at attention awaiting orders. "I am on an important mission to Camp Phantom. Camp Oxblood is important to the safety and wellbeing of those living in the Bend." she gestured toward the fallen captors horses and continued, "take these and ride for Camp Border Wolf under orders to speak directly to the captain. He must send reinforcements to here immediately!"
"Ma'am!" the two responded in unison and flashing a quick salute. They mounted without objection or question and made off toward the Barrier Wood.
Lem watched them gallop off toward the forest, turned and mounted her own bay mare which neighed loudly at her return. Turning to leave through the eastern gate, she noticed several black banners approaching quickly. She reigned her horse in quickly and turned toward southern gate, deciding to cut through the north eastern portion of the [[Calcaire Champaign]] toward Camp Phantom. Her heart fell to her stomach as a second enemy unit closed off her passage south, closing quickly from the south. Lem bit her lip and looked around, she couldn't count on Tuun for aid as the amulet's power was still recharging. She turned to exit through the western gate and found herself surrounded.
"Surrender, Lem of the Crimson Outriders!" one who appeared to be a captain shouted. "Under direct orders, we are to take you to Lord Malmsteen for... 'questioning'." he continued, lowering his spear. Others followed suit.
"Over my dead body!" Lem replied defiantly. She instantly materialized her spear and hurled it toward the captain. The force of the blow threw him for the saddle. She spurred her horse on in an attempt to split the enemies in front of her. The surge of adrenaline made the next few minutes seem like a blur. Distress turned to elation as she passed through the southern gate. Her joy quickly faded as sharp pain forced her to fall foward her her saddle. She looked down and saw two gaping wounds near her abdomen. She coughed as her vision began to fade. Before she knew what had happened she was laying in the dirt watching her horse gallop on without her. She coughed again and feeling the weight of her eyelids as the world spun into darkness.
[[Mission Failed]]11:00am
Fearing the risks of a fight in the open and not knowing when the unit from Camp Oxblood would be returning, Lem decided to push deeper into enemy territory in an attempt to circumvent her current threat. Following river east, she turned to check the distance of those pursuing her. They had maintained their distance, but kept her in sight, almost if driving her into some unknown trap.
Her suspecion had been confirmed, she was headed straight for a makeshift enemy outpost. With no other choice, Lem turned south. She heard the long call of a warhorn behind her, followed two short bursts from a horn to her left. The scouts pursuing her had alerted the outpost and horsemen began to flow out after her. She spurred her horse on trying to gain seperation, but it was no use, they had the angle of pursuit.
Within momemts, Lem was flanked on either side, her materialized spear deflecting strikes from both sides. It was too much, a burning pain ran down her right arm, looking down she saw the tip of a spear sticking out just blew her shoulder. She dropped her spear as pain exploded on her left side. She slumped in her saddle as her vision blurred. Shouts and laughter echoed around as she slowly rolled off the saddle.
[[Mission Failed]]
11:05am
Lem was tired of running, the pain of leaving her sisters back in Camp Oxblood still burned in her. She had to go south in order to complete the mission, fleeing east would only put her in more danger. With a fierce roar, she held her hand out and materialized her bow, focusing her energy to create a dramatic effect. It was a success, the crack formed a red electrostatic discharge that pierced the clouds above her. The four enemy scouts reigned in the horse and slowed down.
She lowered her tricorne cap, the red feather vibrating in the wind. Approaching the scouts quickly, she nocked an arrow took aim and fired. One scout fell. Again, nock aim fire. Another scout grabbed his throat and fell, his foot stuck in a stirrup as he was dragged off by his mount. Time for one last shot, bullseye, the scout held his face screeching unnaturally. Closing in on the final scout, she flipped the bow in her a hands, stood up in her saddle and swung. The bow slapped the spear from the scouts hands as the two passed. Lem turned quickly, adjusted her bow, took aim and planted an arrow in the back of the fourth scout.
Grinning with satisfaction, Lem spurred her mount on toward Camp Phantom as a heavy rain began to fall. The way was clear, or so she thought. She noticed a small group of riders out of the corner of her eye. She immediately noticed the midnight black horse of rider leading them. Ob-Ob Khan's General and executioner, [[Phenex->The Tainted Lord]]. The horse, resembled a clydesdale but ran with the speed of stallion. It was the only horse capable of carrying the weight of it's rider. The robust giant pointed his large spike studded mace toward Lem and six of his undead guard peeled off in pursuit. Lem turned east toward [[Camp Phantom->undead pursuit]], Phenex's guard in tow. You've reached the end of Part One, please eject Disc 1 and insert Disc 2.Lem slid from her saddle and crouched, stealthly making her way to a hidden entrance she had once seen before when Camp Phantom used to be called Camp Widow. Moving from one ruined pillar to the next, she made navigated the ruins to a small patch of rubble near the what remained of the back of the fortress. She quickly entered the small hole, which lead to a long hall with a very low ceiling. Toward the end of the hall, which turned into more of a crawlspace, was small wooden door. Lem heald her breath and entered.
Six Broish Warriors sitting around a small table leapt to their feet when the heard the door to the secret passage open up. "Lady Lem!" one gasped, "We've been holding out for your arrival. I will fetch the captain, one moment." he left with urgency leaving Lem with the others, who watched her hopefully.
A minute later, the soldier who had left returned with the grizzled captain. "Lem..." he smiled, looking as if he hadn't slept in days.
"Captain Stetson, I apologize for my late arrival." She said with a salute.
Returning the salute he responded calmly, "No need for apologies. Do you have the scroll, child?"
Lem handed the Captain the scroll, who took it and examined the contents thoroughly. He stood with the poise and dignity, his armor told the story of a hundred battles. He came from a time long since passed, when men were defined by their character and honor. He was the perfect candidate to have lead Camp Phantom.
A moment later, a fully armored soldier burst into the room "[[Captain]]!, he called, his voice trembling with fear."They've discovered wall!" the soldier shouted, his back against the door as if trying to barricade it from intruders. "Armwood and Seffner are dead, the illusion is fading!" he panted.
Captain Stetson looked grave, but did not allow emotions to betray his duty. He calmly turned to Lem, "Lem, thank you for everything you have done." he pulled the scroll from his belt and slowly unrolled it. "You and your brother, may have saved us all." He dropped the parchment.
Lem watched the paper fall softly to floor, the panic and disorder around her began to slow as she saw what was on the note. The rune 'Rho' was etched into the parchment. Hope exploded inside Lem, she inhaled sharply and looked at Captain Stetson in anticipation.
"I had hoped to this plan this out, but..." he looked seriously at Lem, took a knee and placed an open palm over the rune, "RHO!" he shouted and the rune blazed brightly beneath his hand.
In that instant three warriors burst into existence inside the room. Each holding a specific and dramatic pose, weapons already materialized in their hands. The Broish Warriors in the room had immediately stopped what they were doing and stared in awe at the three warriors in all their glory. Before them stood the three generals of the Broish Warriors - [[Tim]], [[Jack]] and [[Eric]].
"Looks like we are late the party." Eric, the warrior in dark green lobstered mail said wryly.
Lem shook her head, "You three have been practicing your 'epic' poses, huh?"
"Lem!" said Tim, his hawk's head helmet under one arm. "I'm glad to see you've made it safely." he smiled. "A shame Bro couldn't make it."
Captain Stetson coughed loudly, the four broke from their greetings and turned to face him. "Are you three ready to call in our support?" he asked looking between each of the generals. Looking more serious than usual, they each nodded in understanding. "Very well, let's begin the [[counterattack]]." the captain finished drawing a longsword from the scabbard that hung loosely from his belt.Double-click this passage to edit it.Double-click this passage to edit it.Double-click this passage to edit it.<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mLmbC8Pggco?rel=0&controls=0&showinfo=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>Double-click this passage to edit it.
